Code Search from O'Reilly Labs

Posted by robon August 25, 2006

As a by-product of its new MarkLogic content storage database, O’Reilly has just launched an XQuery driven search engine that allows you to search for code within the context of all of their books. Check out their Code Search.

Under the covers, the code search greps the XML (DocBook) source of all O’Reilly books and considers any programlisting longer then three lines, source code. Code that shows up in results is displayed with a few contextual sentences from the paragraph above where it occurred in the book. All source code includes formated line-numbers that don’t get pulled into your clipboard as you cut and paste.

This should be the tip of an iceberg of features that are possible with XQuery and MarkLogic. Keep your eye on labs.oreilly.com for a first look as more of these tools emerge.

The Ruby Cookbook, PDF! 1 comment

Posted by robon August 09, 2006

A friend of mine, Lucas Carlson, just finished the Ruby Cookbook with the help of Leonard Richardson and it’s amazing. (I’m a little jealous because I would love to say I’ve finished my cookbook, but soon enough.)

So, the big news: In an attempt to pry some of those weird Rubyists away from the weird Prags, O’Reilly finially got their act together and just released the Ruby Cookbook as a full, searchable PDF for 50% off the cover price. A damn sweet deal, to be sure. Once you buy your copy and realize how good it is, make sure to post a good review.

This offering marks the first full-length book that O’Reilly has done as a PDF, lets hope there’s more of this to come.
